The Institute of Oceanography is a multidisciplinary marine research institute in the University of Calabar, established in 1982. It is currently one of the few such University-based institutions in Nigeria with the responsibility of undertaking research and teaching in marine sciences disciplines including fisheries resources and aquaculture. OUR MISSION The Institute of Oceanography, University of Calabar shall pursue research into various facets of the aquatic sciences towards increasing our understanding of the marine environment and the sustainable exploitation of her resources. The focus of our efforts in this area shall be the Nigerian coastline, nearshore and coastal areas while recognizing the inter-linkages and inter-dependencies of the marine realm and thus seeking cooperation with other national and international institutions involved in similar work. Through her training programmes, the Institute shall produce manpower equipped to address marine environmental issues in the country and sub-region. OUR VISION Our vision is to become one of the leading aquatic sciences institution in Africa and in the world fully equipped with the best personnel and infrastructure to promote development and management of aquatic resources including all facets of aquaculture.
