16. Research Linkages

I have considered as my priority task since start of my work in the Institute of Oceanography in 1993, the development and maintenance of linkages with foreign/ international institutions and organizations, as IOC Research/Linkage Coordinator. I have organized study visits for most of our technologists as well as research visits for several scientists in Germany and attendances to international conferences, including the sponsorship. I have obtained the sponsorship from FAO for the bibliographic systems (virtual library) AGORA (>1000 journals with full text of publications in agriculture and related sciences) and ASFA (> 1 Million abstracts in fisheries, aquaculture and aquatic biology). The value of the research equipment and books attached to the study and research visits as well of the bibliographic systems is N38.4 Million (167,000 Euro)

At present, I concentrate on linkages with:

  • Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Bangkok and Prince of Songkla University, Had Yai, Thailand relating to mangrove restoration and nipa palm utilization as well as inviting a guest lecturer to IOC and sending a PhD student to AIT.

  • Centre for Marine Tropical Ecology (ZMT), University of Bremen, Germany relating to potential collaboration in mangrove ecology and sustainable management.

  • Institute for Baltic Research, Warnemuende, Germany relating to collaboration in marine chemistry and marine biology as well as an envisaged research visit of an IOC scientist.

  • Institute for Water Ecology and Inland Fishery (IGB), Berlin relating to collaboration in utilization of tropical plant species in fish medicine and an envisaged research return visit of an IGB scientist.

  • Institute for Fishery, Potsdam-Sacrow, Germany relating to collaboration in fish genetics and an envisaged teaching visit of a scientist of Institute for Fishery to IOC.

  • Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) relating to maintenance of acquisition of on- and offline bibliographic systems and its sponsorship.

  • UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) for maintenance of the existing contacts relating to mangrove ecosystems and integrated coastal management.
